Switching To Natural Deodorant And I Didn’t Smell

In my last article, I told you why I was making the switch to natural deodorant. I also mentioned that natural is very different. If you haven’t read it, I recommend you go back and do so. The link can be found at the bottom.

And now, more about natural deodorant.

My First Natural Day

I wore natural deodorant today, and I barely noticed. The only obvious change from my deodorant-free days was the nice smell. That didn’t last long though, and by noon, I didn’t smell like anything, It was back to a normal, smell free day for me.

Now before you say “HEY, that wasn’t helpful!” let me clarify: I’m not normal. I haven’t worn deodorant consistently for YEARS. The result is my body is much more well-adjusted than the average person’s. I know what to expect, and what I just described will largely become your experience too after a while of applying natural deodorant, assuming you are disciplined about it.

Here are a few things to know about natural deodorant so that when you make the switch, you’re well prepared.

Natural deodorant doesn’t last

One of the most disturbing parts of mainstream deodorant is how long the scent lasts. That’s not normal: can smells in nature last 8 hours? No, definitely not. But mainstream deodorant manages it with potentially toxic chemicals. Sounds bad, right? It is. By contrast, natural deodorant usually has a scent, but it lasts at most 1-2 hours. If you are trying to keep your underarms smelling good, you’ll need to reapply it a few times throughout the day. That’s the natural way! You might also find after a while, (some people need 3-6 months), that your natural smell is more pleasant than you thought. But be aware: Natural smell does not mean the smell after 2 days of not showering!! Your natural smell is just the slight scent your body gives off in the first 8-10 hours after you wash yourself with soap. Any smell after that? That’s you, being dirty.

Natural Deodorant Doesn’t Stop Sweating

In fact, you are going to sweat more if you make the switch. If it’s been some time since you went without regular deodorant, you will probably sweat A LOT. This is normal: you’re body is trying to rid itself of all the toxins it couldn’t get out before. This process of detoxing can take up to 2 weeks-2 months, depending on how much you sweat, how bad you need the detox, the time of year, and what food and drink you consume in.

When I first made the switch, I made sure I wouldn’t need to be around anyone during the sweatiest parts of the day. Within 2 weeks the smell from sweating was mostly gone, but the actual sweat? That took months. Today I barely sweat except with exercise, but it took me a while. My body was pretty toxic.

Less is More

With regular deodorant, I remember putting A LOT on. I always felt like I needed more. The same with natural, but actually, it wasn’t necessary. The thing is, putting just a little vs putting a lot on isn’t going to make much difference. Better to put on a little, then reapply a few hours later. That way, you’ll be able to maintain the scent, and that will keep the experience consistent for you and company.

It isn’t 1 smell fits all

This is super important. I have tried 4 natural deodorants. I only still use 1. The reason is, not all natural scents mix well with my body. Unlike chemical scents that artificially dominate all other smells, natural scents mix with existing scents. Different bodies have different scents that are the result of genetic development. Sometimes our scent also changes, depending on diet, hormone levels, and environmental factors. Don’t be afraid to experiment to find the best scent for you. Benefits FAR  outweigh consequences, and your future self will be grateful.

Sticking With the Switch

Some of you will inevitably switch back to chemical deodorant: it’s human nature to seek out the ease and comfort offered by mainstream deodorant, despite the MAJOR health risks. But for those of you who are able to stick with the natural stuff, I highly recommend It. At sheisonpoint.com we sell natural deodorant from both Zest and Amaks Organix. Consider trying one of their brands and making the switch. In the long run, your body will be grateful, and you’ll be living a better life with natural deodorant!
